Nineteen years! And there was me thinking I was getting a new taster for your book!

But srsly, how will the book reviews compare to what's already on your website of many delights?
My books will be like a condensed version of my website, zeroing in on what I believe to be the most important aspects of each song and focusing somewhat on their history and origins as well as what Neil and Chris have said about them. I asked my publisher whether he was worried that the continued existence of my website might cut into books sales, but he said, on the contrary, he believed it would help. He sees the audiences for the website and the book as overlapping but by no means identical. Besides, people are probably less likely to use my website as bedtime reading than they are to use the books. ;-)

Besides, the books should still be around after my website has vanished. I won't be here forever, you know. :-)

I think the music itself is very cool. I never thought about the "I was already late for school" line until people on this forum mentioned it a lot, ha. My mind just automatically snapped to 'oh he must be a college student' since I often refer to 'college' as just 'school'. I guess that's uncommon?

NO. NO. BAD BOY, NEIL, BAD BOY!!
Nothing to see here...keep moving

Juliet had only just become a teenager, too. Which is why I always picket Shakesphere when he's playing at my local community hall.

Yeah yeah I'm not saying it's about a pedophilia or anything. I'm just saying Neil made a mess here since it MIGHT SOUND a little bit pedo.
For example, I could say "I've just fu##k the hell out of that Little girl just outside school" and even if OF COURSE I'm talking about a 20 years old girl called Stacy Little who lives right next door to a public school and made love to/with her in a beautiful consensual way...
I could have found better ways of putting it, don't you think? I mean, on topic, I always skip it. Too cringey for me. Plus I don't find Eminem at all sexy.

I find that line cringe too, but I do feel that is the point, to shock the listener.

Christine Sixteen and Summer (The First Time) are other examples of songs that are the wrong side of proper.

Everyone seems to ignore who Stan is: A young person - falls in love - later commits suicide.

Everyone's been that age, and Neil is expressing how light footed and optimistic this young person was at one point.

It's a SUNNY song, made SAD because we know the outcome.

He ends up being FAR from innocent - his wife and child also die, but at the time of this song he is still innocent and the world is full of promise.

If you like the PSB style of happy/sad, well here it is!

M&M's track is quite brutal and over the top (saved only by the lovely Dido chorus). I think it's cool PSB painted a gentler underbelly onto M&M. EMBRACE THE CRINGE

One of the genuine turds floating atop an otherwise glittering palmarès: excruciating, cringeworthy, exactly the sort of track you wouldn't play to a non-fan to persuade them what they are missing.
And at the end/ Your funny Uncle staring / At all your friends / With military bearing

Correct. The quality control standards between 1997 and 2002 dropped a long, long way.

Retro. :)

Every comment on the official YT video from the general public:

  • this song is unbelievably underrated 🩷
  • Johhny Marr guitar is in full swing on this great track.
  • ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
  • What an awesome song, what an awesome album.
  • 1950 2026 P S B forever ADN ever ❤❤❤❤❤
  • Masterpiece😍😍😍
  • Beautiful song
  • Who else would write a song about loving Eminem haha, I always remember a clip of Dr Dre laughing when he heard this song played to him 🤣 and no diss track came back either!
  • My soundtrack to my life.....
  • Gem of a song
  • I hated this song the first time I heard it, but now, reading the lyrics many years later, wow. Just so clever, such devastating satire. It's far from PSB's best song, but Tennant's lyrics are among his strongest ever.
  • Eminem’s song 😂😂😂😂

What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous?
That Canibus turned into a television evangelist!
Plus, he raps with his regular voice [four impacts]
"What was that?"
"Pet Shop Boys.""

Thats more than "just in passing"
four impacts -> PSB... shouldn't two be enough? :x
It's four because when you roll over something in the road, it usually makes two big thuds, one of each pair of tires, front and back. So two Pet Shop Boys would equal four thuds.

Sorry it took me so long. ;-)
I guess you finally decided to experiment and confirm it
