To mark the centenary of Sergei Eisenstein’s legendary silent film, “Battleship Potemkin”, a restored version made by Deutsche Kinemathek, featuring the celebrated score by Tennant and Lowe of Pet Shop Boys, will be released for the first time in cinemas and on a two-disc Blu-ray and CD package by the BFI.
On 22 August 2025, “Battleship Potemkin” will open in selected cinemas in the UK and Ireland. Ahead of a week-long run, a special double screening event, at BFI Southbank on Friday 5 September 2025 at 6.30pm, will begin with Pet Shop Boys’ feature film “It Couldn’t Happen Here” (1988), in memory of its late director, Jack Bond, followed by a Q&A with Neil Tennant, hosted by Paul Tickell, and then a screening of Battleship Potemkin.
5 September is also the release date of the BFI’s Blu-ray package of the film, containing both a Blu-ray disc and a CD of the score, along with extra features and an illustrated booklet. Simultaneously, Parlophone will release the score on remastered CD and on vinyl for the first time on a double LP. All three formats are available to pre-order now at the link below.
The special features on the Blu-ray and CD are:
Hochhaussinfonie (2017, 68 mins): a multimedia musical production by the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra and Pet Shop Boys, conceived by Markus Rindt and directed by Sven Helbig, on the evening of July 20, 2006, in Dresden
Trafalgar Square Highlights (2004, 4 mins): a behind-the-scenes film when Pet Shop Boys performed their newly composed score for Battleship Potemkin, accompanied by the Dresdner Sinfoniker orchestra in Trafalgar Square, London
Trailer (2025)
A limited edition illustrated booklet featuring new writing by Chris Heath and Sarah Cleary, and archive pieces by Neil Tennant and Michael Brooke

Let's hope the BFI get the speed/pitch of the audio right this time, and that it's doesn't run slow like 'It Couldn't Happen Here's did.
Also, it's not clear from the description if the CD that comes with the BFI version is also the same remastered audio that Parlophone are releasing. I hope so.
Edit: The store description for the BFI Blu-ray+CD says it's the remastered audio on the CD: https://shop.petshopboys.co.uk/gb/battl ... 15506.html
Also, I remember Neil saying the CD had one track edited for it to fit on there. Wondered if the soundtrack to the actual film on the Blu-ray will have the full-length soundtrack on there?

Am I correct that CD+BR version is exclusive to OfStore? Can't find it anywhere else.
Would appreciate some other link

Huh, I'm honestly surprised by the enthusiasm here.
To me this is quite underwhelming.
But a good release, nonetheless.
Of course the film and the soundtrack already exist, and yes in HD.
But the CD soundtrack doesn't perfectly sync with the film due to an edit on one of the tracks.
So now it will be synced up as originally intended.
Did you guys hear there's a double screening, It Couldn't Happen Here and then Battleship Potemkin.
With a Neil Tennant live Q&A in the middle.
I hope the Q&A is filmed and made available to those of us unable to attend.
Apparently there's also a limited edition version of the CD+Blu-ray which contains a booklet with archive pieces by Neil Tennant. Sounds similar to the ICHH release.
Honestly though overall this is barely anything new. I won't watch this.

It'll be the full-length film so it'll be the full-length soundtrack on the Blu-ray. All that was edited was some repetition which they thought made one of the tracks overlong on the soundtrack album without the visuals.TwizzleUK wrote: Thu 10 Jul 2025, 11:40 am

The CD had to be trimmed, obviously, it's limited in length to 79 minutes, unlike the film which is slightly longer.
Re: Battleship Potempkin on vinyl and cd (2023 remaster)
Well this is turning out to be an unexpectedly expensive week!
Just a few months ago I got muddled between the vinyl release of "Closer to Heaven" and BP, thinking it was BP that got released, so my fever dream sort of came true.
I'm assuming the strand alone CD remaster isn't worth getting if you already have the original and are buying the BluRay set.
