I remember at the age of just 19 being very disappointed with this album upon release. I adored “So hard” as the flagship single and the b-side “It must be obvious” was also one of their best up to that point. In the years leading up to this they had been promising a high energy album and I was expecting an album of “So hard” like tracks. “This must be the place…” did not disappoint but after that track I really struggled with this for a long time. A few months later I bought the limited Japan CD and the surprise of getting “Miserablism”, “Bet she’s not you girlfriend”, and the mega-extended “This must be the place…” helped ameliorate that disappointment some, followed by the “Performance” tour which visited Detroit that April. Honestly I was hoping for something more along the lines of “Very” but judging by the sales of “Behavior” as compared to “Very” many others were expecting a high-energy album as well and were similarly disappointed. In a recent interview for this very forum didn’t Julian Mendelssohn say this album sounded, sonically, hollow to him? Compared to their previous releases that’s an assessment I agreed with from the beginning.

Have said all that, in retrospect this IS, if not a masterpiece, then part of a twin magnum opus along with “Very” each being a yin to the other’s yang. In a weird way, the tonal, more organic and downcast shift prefigured the grunge era of “more real” which would follow a year later.

I've said this before, but I remember when this album came out. I'd just started going to a four year university and it was the first time for me living in a dorm. During that period, Duran Duran's "Liberty" came out as well as Pet Shop Boys "Behavior". To be honest, I wasn't pleased with either album. However, one album faltered while the other one blossomed - the latter would be "Behavior". At first I didn't take to it because it didn't have that sound like their first two albums. Then we got the singles from the album. As time went on, I began to appreciate "Behavior" much more. That album is up there in my top 3. It has what one reviewer described as a warmth to it.

I was staying with a group of people temporarily at the time So Hard was released. They formed a diverse group from different cultural backgrounds, but mostly "hard rock and metal boys" musically.

When So Hard was to be broadcast for the first time on TV. the entire household members grouped around TV and hushed anyone trying to speak during the broadcast. I remember their reactions were quite good and they really seemed to have enjoyed it. I was very much surprised and pleased back then to see how PSB transcended the genre borders that easily and were appraised by a wide variety of music lovers.

I do not know their thoughts about Behavior as I left them soon after. Also there was that AC/DC and Mötley Crüe fan in the office who treasured Discography but couldn't stomach Introspective. People are weird, aren't they?

A great overall album missing the hit singles of the previous two albums. One you appreciate more as you age, I was 18 at the time.
1990 was the time when A-ha with East of the Sun, West of the Moon, George Michael with Listening Without Prejudice, along with PSB's Behaviour took a more reflective, melancholy mood on their albums.

Crying In The Rain is a really outstanding cover. I have not heard much else from that album (also Early Morning) but that song was a staple in my playlist in early 90s.

Ahh the memories! I bought Behaviour (on cassette at the time) at a record store in Belfast - I was at Uni in Northern Ireland. I also picked up, by chance, Being Remixed on vinyl in a dinky little record store in Coleraine. My recollection of what I thought of the music at the time is a bit fuzzy, but So Hard was already a belter in my books, and I'm sure the album was on heavy rotation in my cars stereo cassette player. Definitely a huge part of the sounds of my first year at university.

My god 35 years ago , I remember getting the cd and tape , and playing it non stop , laying in my bedroom floor in the dark with speakers from my hinari disc deck either side , feeling every beat , it’s a stunning beautiful cd , funny the only song I never liked was so hard , it didn’t fit right on the cd with me , it has to be my most played cd ever , in fact it’s up there with George Michaels older as my favourite cd ever , pure class

Behaviour is the best piece of contemporary music in the history of the world. A work of art that can only be compared to the great masterpieces like Beethoven's Symphony 9 in D minor or Bach's Mass in B minor.
It's perfection. It redefines perfection.
Personally, it literally saved my life and helped me go safe through really awful teen years.

I bought it on cassette from Our Price as a 15 year old, then walked to the barbers for a haircut I had booked. The barber saw the Our Price bag, and asked what I had bought. I showed him, and he put it on the stereo in the shop. I remember him saying it sounded really different from their previous songs during 'Being boring'.

I was disappointed initially. That changed quickly. It will always be my favourite PSB album, and also my favourite album of all time.
