Two different shows they can offer, some speculation to take this further!

#1 Post by Sandy Shaw »

So, the Boys in theory could repeat / re-stage Obscure in other venues or take it on tour.
Would you want this or should it just stay as a one-off week?
If organised by a promoter if course, they could rock up to a venue in future and offer to do Obscure one night and Dreanworld the next!

My hunch/hope is they 'may' do another residency or mini tour of this at a later date, seeing as this will obviously sell out quickly. Perhaps this is a dry run to test the water/response. Let's not forget they did a second run at the Opera House, albeit with different presentations..

This could go on tour like Kylie's "ANTI TOUR" a few years back. Let' face it, no one is making money from selling music anymore so why not go on tour, 3000 seater "intimate" venues. £100 a pop. Or even a 30 date residency a la Savoy in 1997. I remember you could get tickets on the day for that one! My how the popularity has increased since then!

A pet shop boys nightclub tour in the US would sell out in a second, but I don’t know if it would be profitable. I imagine it would have to be paired back — no dancers, no staging, etc.
I sincerely *love* Disco 2 and listen to it straight through regularly.

I'm rather banking on this being a one off if I get tickets, seeing as if I do I will have to buy flights and accommodation from Canada.

However I think there's mileage in this concept and would love to see it toured worldwide.

Given what we know about the boys, this could indeed be a test run. They could hold another series of concerts in London in autumn or in a year's time. Moreover, taking Obscure to the stage won't stop them from continuing with Dreamworld. In my view, they'll just do both and perform Dreamworld for as long as they have bookings. However, I can't imagine them doing a proper tour with this. It'll work in Berlin, but other than that, I can't imagine where else they could take it. Even if Obscure doesn't include a proper stage design or setup, it'll need to be economically reasonable.

I have no idea if these shows are a trial run or not … but it did catch my attention that the presale wording on the official site states ‘UK’:

Pre-order* ‘Volume’ here for priority ticket access to ‘Obscure Pet Shop Boys’ UK concerts

Might be reaching here but could be a hint at further shows elsewhere…?

At the very least I do hope they extend this run so all of us hardcore fans get to experience it
you could say conventional ... and I could claim intentional

I'm sure they will do this in Berlin. Also, they will for sure do a signing in Berlin for Volume.

Exclusivity is a huge part of this - for starters, it's aimed at the hardcore fan. Whatever about touring it - I imagine they could if they wished - I think they should make an effort to vary the setlist each night. Even if it's only a couple of different songs. Make the event totally unique for those who go to any night.

Having spent half a decade touting the greatest hits, doing the b-sides and album tracks is proper Pet Shop Boys contrariness where they insist on doing the very opposite to what they previously did.

I think any concert of the Boys in a 1500-capacity venue will sell out quickly, whether they play the obscures of the obscure or the greatest hits.

It would be intersting to see whether they change the setlist from day to day, or whether it is the same soms every day (maybe dropping or adding one or the other). If they have more tours left in them after Dreamworld, maybe some of these 'obscure' tracks will end up in the regular playlist.

But I doubt they will go on with these large Dreamworld-like tours for much longer, even though they are very prolific when it comes to releasing new music. But who knows?

TBH, I don't see a full Obscure tour happening, it will be too costly I think.

Even though I will not be able to attend the Obscure residency, I am happy they do this for the hardcore fans. I just hope they record it and release it e.g. as a bonus disc or a stand-alone release.

It' s a funny idea to change the setlist for each night. As far as I know them they won't do that. They will play every night the same setlist I guess.
I can also imagine a concert in Berlin one day but no obscure world tour. I' m planing to travel to London. I hope I can get tickets next week. My last London time was 1997 for two Savoy concerts ( and I was 1993 at the Equality show). Still remember these good times...

They’ve never, ever, in their entire history of touring made significant changes to a setlist one night to the next. Not gonna happen.

It's a fair bit of effort relearn/rehearse up to 25 (?) songs, some of which they've never performed live. Five nights seems a short/limited payback period. Maybe this could run to some select major cities. Its always going to be niche to a degree.

Weren’t there different set lists for different Somewhere shows? At least a couple of songs?
