Track-by-Track: From Please to Nonetheless

Before is a great track, with some excellent remixes. It’s a shame it wasn’t a bigger hit, but as Chris has said.Sometimes people are wrong.

I really didn't like Before upon its release. It just seemed quite flat as a PSB opening single. It just sort of bumbled along and didn't really go anywhere.

I've come to appreciate it more in recent years, and the remixes are partly to credit for that renewed interest.

Still not high on my list of PSB faves though, but not rock bottom by any means.

I don't think it's a bad song, but I don't think it's a great song either. It's one of my least favorites on the album. I see what they're trying to achieve, and I see that they actually pull it off with "Leaving" many years later. For me, it's by far their worst first single. But I love "Hit and Miss," which I consider a far superior song. If I imagine "Hit and Miss" as the A-side, "Before" seems like a great B-side, and ultimately, I do think it's a great single

Track 97: "Before"

Chronology: Bilingual, Track 10

While there was general consensus on the previous track, I think this will be more contentious.

Cards on the table, I've always loved Before. It's a very different sound for them, soulful and redolent of US garage. It's similar to The Human League's Human, with a very European style being filtered through US production. They did the same years later on Elysium and that album is also underappreciated by Petheads.

As a one-two with Se a vida é , it sells the album rather well, just like Can you forgive her? and Go West on Very.

Have they ever performed it live? Maybe one for Obscure, providing Neil has plenty of auto tune.

They played Before as one of the encore songs on the night I went to see them at the Savoy.

Always loved this song myself, production is great, and the chorus is really catchy (it shares a similar structure to the pop kids).

This was the last song where they still got regular prime time commercial radio airplay.

Would love it to it added to the Dreamworld setlist, it is after all their highest charting song in the UK since Go West (ab fab excluded) !

I like Before, but the falsetto kills it.

Weirdly, that's one of the reasons I like it. Immaculate production, it's just so sleekly cool.

Before was at the moment something very different from the previous ones, and because of that I think it was not applauded at all. Ir’s fresh and catchy but for me something is not quite well (again) with the way Neil’s vocals are produced/engineered. It should have been a bigger hit if they had the aim to promote it as first album single deserves.

They didn't really promote it though, did they? Can anyone recall the promotion for Before? I've only ever seen the video.

Some days I hate it, some days I can't stop playing it. It's a complex song and I don't think it was a good lead single, but they took some risks there and that I appreciate. I think it would benefit with some vocoder effects, but Cher hadn't released Believe yet.

I've never understood why they didn't really promote Bilingual whatsoever. You would have thought being the lead single from the album that followed on from Very, they would perform it on Top of the Pops and other various shows at the time.. As it happened, we only got the O Zone special and then once the album had been released for 3 months , the TFI appearance. Unfortunately by that time, in November, the water slides were closed..

I love Before! It’s not your usual PSB single, it’s kind of unique in their repertoire.

Yes! It's an odd little duck - definitely wouldn't have pegged it as a PSB number - but it has a very sweet and simple message and a bright, airy feel to it, buoyed by the falsetto vocal (I'm also a fan of Nightlife and Some Speculation for this reason). The aural equivalent of a tall glass of iced lemonade with a sugar rim and an umbrella in it.

I think this song probably cemented for me the fact that I have now entered my Radio 2 era.

I really love BEFORE. This song got all my attention and made me fall in love again with PSB. Indeed, I never liked Very, except Can You Forgive Her, Go West and Young Offender. BEFORE was different, and absolutely great, for me!

always liked it, without thinking it sounded like a real hit. Again maybe could have done with a beefier production. I also liked the cover photos and the move away from the Very era back into looking a bit cool again. Think it got to 7 in the charts? Not a bad showing at all with minimal promotion.

Track 98: "To Step Aside"

To Step Aside was the song that, during my first three or four spins of the new album Bilingual, made me look forward to the entire journey. It felt like the climactic reward—the oasis after the desert walk that was Before. My Finnish-inherited passion for melancholy and my newfound love of all things Latin and Spanish were finally reaching the altar in a (for once) holy matrimony.
