Russell T Davies' beloved Channel 4 drama It's a Sin is being adapted for the stage by Rambert, the UK's leading contemporary dance company, with the show's original creator returning as Executive Producer.

The announcement, made during Rambert's centenary year, confirms that the BAFTA-nominated series — which followed a group of young gay men living through the HIV/AIDS crisis in London between 1981 and 1991 — will be reimagined as a full-scale contemporary dance production, described as "raw, euphoric and deeply moving".

Davies, whose credits include Queer As Folk and Doctor Who, is joined as Executive Producer by legendary pop duo Pet Shop Boys, whose iconic 1987 song lent the original series its title, as well as producer Glyn Fussell, the creative force behind Sink the Pink and Mighty Hoopla festival.

The production will be choreographed and directed by Rambert Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, reuniting with dramaturg Kaite O'Reilly to develop an original script for the stage. Grammy-nominated composer and multi-instrumentalist Roman GianArthur (known for his work on Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer) will compose the music, with Luke Halls Studio handling set and video design.

Luke Halls Studio's previous work spans arena tours for Adele, Dua Lipa and Take That.

The world premiere is set for Aviva Studios in Manchester, in a co-production between Rambert and Factory International, before travelling to venues including Wales Millennium Centre, Capital Theatres in Edinburgh, Sadler's Wells, and Les Théâtres de la Ville in Luxembourg. Full casting and performance dates are yet to be announced.

Speaking about the project, Swan Pouffer said in a statement: "Storytelling sits at the heart of Rambert's mission. This is a story we feel compelled to tell right now, and collaborating with Russell — one of the most powerful storytellers of our time — is incredibly exciting."

Davies added that the stage adaptation represented "one of the greatest honours" of his life, while the Pet Shop Boys described the original series as "a landmark" that "compellingly presented the reality and tragedy of the AIDS crisis to a mass audience".

The production promises to blend contemporary dance, archive material and cinematic visuals to explore themes of memory, community and queer resilience — asking, in Rambert's own words, "how we choose to live".

The 2021 series was hailed by critics. Empire called it a "masterpiece, a heartfelt series into which he has clearly poured every fibre of his being to create an involving, devastating and often very funny piece of TV."

The Irish Times wrote: "As a portrait of, and valentine to, a lost era of gay culture, It's a Sin is deeply affecting. And yet Davies, for whom the project is obviously hugely personal, packs in oodles of warmth and humanity too."

It's a Sin the dance production is currently in early development. Further details are expected later this year.

It also means Neil and Chris are shaping the tone and making sure it feels right, and given their whole career has been about that mix of euphoria and melancholy around 80s club culture, they’re arguably better placed doing that than just knocking out a few songs.

Fascinating that the article doesn't mention this one other band that Luke Halls worked with, who might have some sort of, y'know, connection or input to this project??

I'm more fascinated by the choreographer's name - a Swan Pouffer sounds like one of those obscure royal jobs where you have to fluff out the feathers of an obnoxious waterfowl.

I hope they do the series justice with this production. I'm always kind of leery about contemporary dance.

It looks obvious they they want to be involved on another musical, "Closer to Heaven" was not a good experience for them. They are involved on the ballet and I suppose writting more songs for a musical is now too much.
