IMHO, I think these are the ones you could say that have been worldwide relevant and famous all over the world, a high cultural impact and with long career.

Joy Division/New Order: yes (with the human league are almost the creators of synth pop)
INXS: yes/no (I don't think they they were as relevant as others but they were)
Billy Idol: no (he had his moment in the early 80's of MTV but it was too short)
The Black Crowes: no (I only know one song from them)
Iron Maiden: yes (with Metallica, AC/DC are the big names of heavy metal)
Phil Collins: yes (relevant in the 70's, 80's, 90's and also in 00's, it would be well deserved)
Sade: yes (she is an icon and a music style by herself)
Jeff Buckley: no (maybe he is a relevant rock star but more in USA than in the rest of the world)
Mariah Carey: yes (she has been #1 in USA 19 times, only The Beatles made it better with 20)
Melissa Etheridge: no (it's not so famous)
Lauryn Hill: no (she had her time but only with Refugees and it was quite short)
Oasis: yes (with Blur they were pop icons everywhere with that pop cultural fashion called Brit Pop)
P!nk: yes (more or less 30 years of relevance)
Shakira: yes (how many latin singers can say they are relevant also on English market?, not many)
Luther Vandross: no (he had his time but I don't think he was relevant outside USA)
Wu-Tang Clan: no (rappers are not agree)

Either they change the name or they only include rock artists. It's as ridiculous as having an Electronic Music Hall of Fame and nominating AC/DC or Bob Marley... Or having a Classical Music Hall of Fame and nominating Michael Jackson and Madonna. If I were them, I wouldn't want to go in for the simple reason that Pet Shop Boys don't play rock, so what the hell would they be doing there?
It would be different if it were the Music Hall of Fame... which I think is what it should be. Have these people realized that rock isn't the only musical style that exists, nor the one with the most artistic value, nor, of course, the coolest thing for decades...

I don't think New Order will be there to be honest. How they could even think of being on the same stage as Hooky after some of the things he's said about certain members of the band is beyond me. Fair enough he left for the reasons he's mentioned in the past, but behave like an adult and have a bit of dignity about it.

Yes, it's an inherently US-centric institution. Which isn't to say that UK artists won't get a look in, but it's US sales, exposure, impact and renown which will shape eligibility. In the US, Pet Shop Boys were a mere pop footnote after Domino Dancing.

Yes, too US-centric. NO and DM are big in the US, PSB are perceived as a one hit wonder over there.

An institute that seriously considers a boy band like New Edition for the RRHoF cannot be taken seriously... nobody outside the US has heard of them (I know Bobby Brown was a member, but nobody would consider nominating N*Sync because Justin Timberlake was a member or One Direction because of Harry Styles...). Yes, I know they had a UK #1 but their other singles were minor hits at best.

The label 'rock' (let alone rock 'n' roll) is already problematic, as it is also a US-centric way of looking at music. Whereas we take pride (at least I do) that bands like Pet Shop Boys are ultimate pop bands, Americans use the label 'pop' in a derogatory way for what is in the current charts. They do not even consider a band like Erasure 'pop', as they had no hits in the US, so they are grouped under the indie label...
I had a discussion with US Duran fans who were offended that I consider Duran a pop band, they insisted on the rock label 'because they use guitars'. While I would consider the Wedding Album soft rock, their 80s hits are perceived as pop music by most if not all Europeans I would say. People would laugh at you if you would say that you are a fan of "rock band Duran Duran".

I would say rock music is AC/DC, Zeppelin, Muse, Live, Nirvana etc.

Erasure had three Top 20 hits in the U.S. with extensive U.S. radio play.

I love NO but they don't come over as the sharpest tools sometimes. Musically and technically brilliant of course. They really should at least be civil with each other at their age - tbh the spite mainly seems to come from Hooky, entertaining as his books etc are, and I'm sure he has valid gripes, but he should grow up a bit

I don't think New Order are any bigger in the US than PSB. New Order never had a top 10 album on the Billboard 200, Pet Shop Boys did. New Order never had a top 20 hit on the Billboard 100, PSB had six, five of them in the top 10. Globally it's no contest either. People read way too much into the Hall of Fame, which is little more than a marketing gimmick.

Hooky is very vocal, where the others choose to remain silent. Unfortunately that comes across as Hooky sounding like a foaming at the mouth loon, but I suspect his points have merit.

Sometimes staying silent and biding your time pays off, but I suspect Hooky doesn't feel he'll be heard if he doesn't speak out.
