It's not as if they didn't fail before CTH.
It Couldn't Happen Here (the film) was a failure as well.
Mind you, there was nothing wrong with making a film in 1988. It's just that it was done in the wrong way.
There was nothing wrong with a musical in 1999-2001, it's just that they failed with the story and many of the songs.
I love ICHH even if objectively it's not very good. You can see a correlation with Performance in its oddness and surrealism. I suppose I prefer them being a pop group and am generally not that bothered about their extracurricular stuff.
I didn't see either Closer to Heaven or The Most Incredible Thing and don't think I've even played the album from the latter which is pretty mad. I enjoyed A Man From the Future but am not desperate for its release.
Potemkin was great though, possibly because they had such a strong work of art to start with.

Like C2H, i saw TMBT in London and enjoyed it very much! Listen to both albums a lot too, TMBT has a very nice "soundtrack"

I will say, though, that at the beginning Neil Tennant said to me: “Rufus, you’re all excited now, and wrapped up in the fantasy of it, but just know that when it collapses, which it probably will, there is a certain type of heartache which is reserved for people whose musicals fail, and it’s really brutal.” He was 100% correct. I never felt so low in my life.

Personally I find Performance more cringeworthy than both C2H and TMBT together. I don't like the old tours where Chris is not actually playing keyboards but only miming or doing nothing.

Still waiting for a proper high quality (master quality!) release from the University tour 2002. We have three live songs on the I Get Along CD and they are great, especially Love comes quickly.
