It's a little frustrating to have to report this but EMI have decided to delay the release of Pet Shop Boys' new album, Fundamental, until May 22.
He, he, he... corrected in only 20 minutes

Ok, I'll spend the spring with a leaked copy.

Well, it's not like we weren't expecting a delay is it?

I don't think it's bad news to be honest - sounds like it's gonna get released with all the support it should get for a change. Perhaps they've been surprised by the positive comments received to date and realise they might have a few sales on their hands!

Who will remember comments in may that have been written and published in january/february? I don't think it will help the sales at that time.

Yeah thats true, its just like when ive seen some bands play top of the pops a week or so before their single was released! Does not make sense to me. I think most people act on instinct, hear a song they like and buy it the next day or something.
Let's just hope the music press still write about it then.

My impression is that the Pets are rather peeved with EMI about the delay. Who knows what record company politics have pushed the release back by five weeks? Still, it now means that the album will be released on my birthday, which I am taking as a good omen. Mind you, so was the Absolutely fabulous single that was pulled on the day of release so the b-side could be changed!

it always amazes me that when given a little information, postings on this board of supposed PSB fans become so negative. here are my observations on whats going on:

the album has received great buzz from the few journalists/fans who have heard it. EMI has decided to make and actual effort to promote the album, hence the delay to plan ahead for the release. at the same time N&C are working on b sides for upcoming singles. seems like good news to me.

hopefully something will leak soon so we can all hear what the buzz is about.

Can we kidnap Ting Tong's son and demand the new album as a ransom?

Thankyou - my point precisely.

The record company needs to promote the album with an integrated marketing campaign, including advertising (not just a page in Q), electronic comms, direct mail etc etc etc. For PSB I think they would only do this with a great buzz - which they have, judging by the response so far.

Otherwise it would be supported in the usual half-arsed way which some recent releases have. I am not saying that they've suddenly been elevated back into priority act status, but I wouldn't mind betting that they realise they could have a real success on their hands.
