No CD for new tracks?

I agree with Patrick to a certain extent-- I agree this new "DVD audio format" is a bit annoying. And downloading the tracks aren't the answer, at least in the US, since we can't download from the UK iTunes store, nor Napster UK or 7Digital. It would be very cool to download them from the PSB site directly, and not have to worry about where we lived in the world limiting our ability to get the songs...

And what of these UK "chart rules"? I remember hearing about these silly rules ever since the days of Behavior. Apparently a CD single could not contain more than 20 minutes of music or something? So the UK releases were like, CD 1, CD 2, and even CD 3 or DVD; whereas the US releases would contain *all* mixes. Highly annoying! So what are these "new" rules? Whatever the case, they are *very* ridiculous!

Lastly, I want to know WHERE ARE THE 12" SINGLES?! You'd think with this PSB "dance music renaissance" that they would be releasing 12" singles like crazy, but alas, NONE have been released commercially to date for any single! I just scored the 3x12" for I'm with stupid...thankfully...but haven't heard about one for Minimal yet... how are we DJs to be satisfied? It certainly isn't with a "radio edit" clear 7" single!!

Personally, I buy the CDs/DVDs first.
Rip those
Then buy downloads of those not on the CD, cos of the annoying copystuff.

What pissed me off was I'm with stupid when we had a 7" useless to me, a CD, a dvd and all the mixes as downloads and it took hours to locate and buy it all. The only thing I dislike now is vinyl as is too big to store (and I have to record them - if no download). Downloads are a good move (when they work) for exclusives/extras/bonuses etc - but I prefer a CD for mixes. I tend to just build my own CD now each time as fed up of various limitatiions. Then I have it all as I like it, all in one place. Then if I need a track again, can rip it again from my version easily. I don't mind a 7" if is a week later, but not instead of a CD.

However, what will say I think overall a dvd is not too bad. I can rip it anyway and I like getting the video as one day could make up a new dvd of new videos. I also think that as N & C don't get the publicity they once did, nor the income maybe they once did, it makes sense to have downloads now. I expect they want overheads to be minimal.

My few korunas:

1) I can't buy anything on iTunes, even if I had fortune.

2) Even if I use any other paid download service, I don't like the idea of lower quality compared to CD.

3) Even if I buy DVD, I can't play it in my hi-fi CD player.

4) I can do it so that somehow I plug my DVD player to an amplifier/speakers. But why should I mess with cables (maybe even buy some additional) to use a video player as an audio player. This might be the easiest solution, but I obtained DVD player to watch videos, not to listen to music. And this also doesn't solve the problem with portability (sp?) of songs to a PC or wherever. I can't rip audio off DVD as I don't have DVD player in my PC.

5) Alternatively, maybe the audio-only tracks can be listened to directly via TV (when played on DVD player connected to it), too. (Can anyone confirm?) But that will be quite lo-fi again. So or so, there also haven't been audio-only tracks released on VHS, to be listened to via VCR on TV with blue screen.

6) Even if I had a DVD player in my PC, I don't like the idea of having to copy the audio from DVD and then to CD only to be able to play it in hi-fi. Not talking about the fact that often such CD-Rs playback starts with difficulties only and makes strange mechanic noise.


As long as PSB are musicians and not film-makers, I see no logic in the fact that anyone should be bound to either be fully DVD equipped (or accept low-bitrate digitals) to be able to enjoy their NEW SONGS, when these could be released on a CD.

(I'm going to buy all three formats anyway, but why at least they didn't put BOB on CD1? I wouldn't mind digital download "quality" that much in case of IP and NTFT. But then again, I don't see the video being offered on 7digital, so if someone needs complete DVD content, there's no help it seems...)

I believe they still have higher incomes than most of us here, yet it is us who is kind of forced to spend our incomes on tech. equipment to be able to get something (DVD-only new songs(s) [I don't cound Domino dancing as quality of that degrades listener's experience]) to a CD (and also to waste their time with all that), or to be able to have as good DVD player playback of DVD as in case of (for ages owned CD player) playback of CD (correct me if I'm wrong, but IMO there are DVD players and DVD players), when that could have been released on a CD by themselves (PSB) in the first place.

It's great that we don't have chart rules that govern the very few singles that are issued in the US. Of course how many 75 minute singles have you purchased and realized 65 minutes of it is crap? Woohoo! 9 mixes but only one is worth listening to. Thanks I really wanted 3 dub versions of 3 remixes I already disliked.
Why put out singles when all the record companies have to do is pay Clear Channel for airplay? It's sad but seems true.
The music industry is crap and now they've got a whole generation of people hooked on downloads with sound quality equivalent to cassettes.
One way to voice opinions is with our wallets. Only buy the version that has a new b-side song. Forget about the various edits and remixes (most of which showcase the remixer and not the artist).
IMO, a group like PSB has two choices: Follow the industry / trends and try to adapt. Or, exist mostly for their fanbase and ignore certain aspects of a changing industry. Either way they will never please everyone.

My main bone of contention is with the audio downloads. I don't like the idea of paying more for far less in terms of sound quality. Its a sad fact that the pirated rips of the mixes are actually better quality than the ones out there to buy; not to mention the ludicrous drm restrictions that I have to contend with.

Maybe my fandom is on the wane, but for the first time I actually didn't buy the entire singles package and skipped the 2 track CD; the radio edit is already on the mix CD and I don't really want to pay money for a bonus track I'm never going to listen to. I guess I'm no longer content to just have the CD's happily sit on my shelf.

Its not entirely PSB's fault, they are hampered by the ludicrous chart rules, however, I don't think they're making the best out of it either.

I am not aware of a Japanese release for Minimal (or I'm With Stupid, for that matter) being on the cards. This is quite a shame as there seem to be no limits as to what can be put on a Japanese maxi-single - nine or ten tracks / mixes is not unusual.

I wonder if there will even be a single released from Fundamental in Japan. Perhaps if the Pets tour here...

Considering the wishes of their fanbase, considering the fact (?) that cd1 of Minimal didn't sell many copies, and considering the fact that you can only release 2 cd-singles that are eligible for the charts... I think they should release 2 maxi cd-singles next time, rather than a 2-track and a maxi.

So, it's a bit like the Before idea:
Minimal EP:
1: Minimal (radio edit), 2: Blue On Blue, 3: In Private (7-inch), 4: No Time For Tears (7-inch)

Minimal mixes:
1: Minimal (radio), 2: Minimal (Tocadisco), 3: Minimal (M-Factor), 4: Minimal (Telex Hell), 5: Minimal U-Mix

And then, as the 3rd format, a 12-inch with stuff like: Tiga, Superchumbo, Telex Heaven, M-Factor Dub.

There's a Dutch 2-track cd-single (Minimal radio/In Private 7-inch), in cardboard sleeve and a partly transparent cd.

Unfortunately they don't. If you want to release two cd-singles, one of them must be a 2-track and another a maxi-cd . You can't release 2 cd-singles or 2 cd-maxis.
