LOL, not even Drico can really come to this tracks defense with one of his witty ditties. If people prefer the Etienne track, fine, but there isn't much going on with it.
And tryin' to figure out what happened to 'Germaine Propaine'
"He couldn't have fell off that hard" Ain't no way
"What happened to the way you was rappin' when you was scandalous
That Canibus turned into a television evangelist"
Plus he raps with his regular voice [BOOSH! BOOSH!]
[BOOSH! BOOSH!] (What was that?) Pet Shop Boys

Oh, my superhero wit and literary genius founders on the endless kryptonite of your mindless polls.

You'll have to forgive me. We all have our limits.

Oh, I forgive you. But making wise cracks about my polls doesn't go too far in convincing me that we have a classic song on our hands.

It seems a bit odd a random a comparison. One is a cover version and released as a b-side, the other was a new song and a top ten hit. I get the DJ connection, but it's still stretching it.

Erm, I really don't find it stretching it at all. It seems a very easy comparison.

Especially since BOTH were singles. In fact, I heard Break 4 Love on US radio once. Just because Break 4 Love has some mixes on Release singles didn't mean it didn't have a CD1 and 2 all it's own.

This response is like someone who needs help fixing their computer and when the repairman gets there he sees it's not plugged into the wall.

But I do see now that the Etienne song went Number 7 in the UK. That's the answer to it's defense. It's been sedimentized in the subjective mind as a solid mass of a song, as something representing something more than it is, due to it's radio play.

I know everyone has their own phenomenological experience, but sometimes I wonder how things can be so far off.

No, I think the main difference is that the PSB track is throwaway karaoke fodder which is vastly inferior to the original, and the Saint Etienne track is their biggest hit single ever.

You proved my point. It's their "biggest hit single ever". What if New York city boy was PSB's biggest hit single, would it be better than It's A Sin. You're just backing up the track as a big hit, not as a quality track. It got no mainstream US play here (only in clubs), and no one on the street knows it. For me, St. Etienne have at least 75 better songs.

I'm sorry, I didn't realise it was my job to humour you. Besides, the forum's clown vacancy has already been filled.

Nope. People bought it because they liked it; ergo it was their biggest hit ever.

It wasn't released in the UK, except as part of Home and Dry so I don't choose to count it as a single.

How rude? Everyone on this forum is a dick. I don't even get skyhigh's recent reuse of that photo, but it's extremely rude. It's just a guy at his computer. Let him be. I mean, Firthy has a picture in his avatar that is fat, why not use his avatar? Because you know who it is and it would be rude to do that?

The mods may delete this post due to my bringing up Firthy (nothing against him at all) in a personal way, but I do it to make a point. It's on thing to disagree about music, it's another to bring in ad hominum attacks. Cut it out!

This is still an argument from "mass appeal". Heart had more mass appeal than Domino Dancing, but it wasn't the better song. Some awful awful bullcr#p has gone to number 1 and long ago been dumped into the dustbins of history. It's not enough to say, this song is great because a bunch of people bought it.
