Better than Winner's 86. That got no hype at all.

There was plenty of hype, but I bet most of the hype went into the ineligible "instant-grat" part of the sales when people pre-ordered The Next Day, otherwise this song would be number 1. I dare say most of the downloads came from instant-grat.

Well, I thought the Messiah himself had returned last week when perusing The Guardian. They had an entire section devoted to "The return of Bowie" on their front page that momentarily suggested the rapture.

I think what grates is not Bowie's comeback, but the tedious hype that surrounded it from people who ignored the bugger less than 10 years ago. It was a triumph of sorts for NYTom's "sit on a beach for three years" wisdom, and hope that the people who'd taken you for granted even noticed in the meantime.

There may be another single released before the album so there's another chance to hit no.1...me thinks not. Btw whoever said Reality was a turd needs their ears syringed. Reality had some brilliant tracks - New Killer Star and Never Get Old are classics. Heathen was very overrated. Hours...was appaling.

Bowie's comeback couldn't be less grating. A simple "here's a new track on iTunes from my upcoming album" and that's it. That's something Pet Shop Boys would do. Very low-key. Like I said its as if he never was away. The fans of DB and the press might think otherwise which is why they gave it the fanfare Bowie didn't even organise.
