I listened to MM a few times and it's not a bad album or really boring of course it's not on the level of their best rather like the last three albums. I always like to compare Pet Shop Boys with Depeche Mode both band have their peaks with continuously releasing five excellent albums Depeche Mode from Black Celebration to Ultra, Pet Shop Boys from Please to Very. Even their best albums Depeche's Violator reminds me PSB Introspective these two cd's were pretty important for both bands just like Songs of Faith and Devotion was Pet Shop Boys Behaviour change in style and tone. But now they are in the same time of their careers we will see what Pet Shop Boys bring with 15 studio album.

depends on when you came in:
i agree with what you said about the pet shop boys.

but for depeche mode, its their first five albums that can't be matched.
speak and spell
a broken frame
construction time again
some great reward
black celebration

after that, it was half-hearted, commercial based music (for the masses)
that i couldn't care about anymore.

much like the pet shop boys, they always had some great singles here and there,
but none of the albums were very good, or could match their initial output to me.

and just to be on topic, i have heard the new album, but much like the last 10,
it doesn't really add or take away from anything they've done or stand out.

there's a couple of good songs on there, and hopefully some mixes for singles,
but i won't be playing it multiple times.

I think you left out Violator in that list of best albums, because it is their best imho.

I’ve listened through Memento Mori 5 times now in the best place to listen to an album (in the car). It really is very good, alongside playing the angel it’s their best this millennium.

I really like it, I'd say it's a solid album.
It gives hope for PSB's efforts.

Definitely worth a listen. It's practically mandatory listening for any and all Petheads as far as I'm concerned.
I think Chris Lowe would like the song Soul With Me, it has that euphoric sadness he's described in interviews.

Overall the album is very Depeche Mode.
Perhaps PSB will do the same. I can see it being a real career defining release.

Just hearing Ghosts Again on the radio, it struck me that it’s the same chord change as the chorus of Kings Cross.

My first impression was that Depeche got into PSB Mode with Ghosts again anyway..
The instrumental bit 2:30 is amazing, but less PSB than the rest ;⁠-⁠)

If you like your Depeche Mode dark and brooding, I would say there’s plenty to like here. If you’re looking for big anthems it’s slimmer pickings. The good news for PSB fans is that the production is excellent. For me there’s a strong Kraftwerk influence - Wagging Tongues reminds me of Europe Endless and People Are Good has shades of Computer Love. Soul With Me has some nice sounds too. But as suspected, Ghosts Again is the standout track.

Have Depeche Mode released anything as good as Electric or Fundamental since Songs Of Faith And Devotion though? Fans always say each new album is “the best since Ultra”, but it always sounds hopeful rather than truthful.

Hmm... Playing the Angel was good released at the times of Fundamental, Exciter reminds me Pet Shop Boys Release similar kind of record for both bands.

You can definitely hear the Kraftwerk influence,I've listened to the album again and it still doesn't do it for me,Three or four decent tracks but nothing amazing.

One good song and a bunch of others that make me want to slit my wrists. But that’s always been Depeche.
