The single is the starting point but we can reason and wander around it, can't we?
People have been talking already about Agenda and you actually mentioned Jack the Lad and The resurrectionist, and they are b sides as well.
My comment also origins in the notion of a song being about somebody in particular, like you said Jack the Lad.
