So "Leaving" wasn't about Brexit then?

Re: Pet Shop Boys say NO to Brexit
I don't agree with Neil this time. Not that I live in the UK, but I actually wish my country - Sweden - should leave the EU as well! I voted against joining EU in 1994, and as time has passed I have never regretted that statement.Tom Angel wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 2:19 pm Even PSB get it wrong sometimes - the UK will still be in Europe. We will simply not be in the EU. These things are NOT the same. It's a rather embarrassingly reductive argument.
Anyway. I'm busy.
It's just too sad that leaving the EU is now mostly associated with right-wing nationalist movements, but we must remember that many left-wing parties (including the Swedish Left Party) are strongly against EU as well, and have been so from the start.
Re: Pet Shop Boys say NO to Brexit
Whether they said they'd act on it or not isn't the point. Legally a referendum IS ADVISORY and in most historical cases has in fact required 60 percent in favour...and even then does not have to be acted on.JSDOUVRES wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 10:12 pmSorry, Only advisory? Are you sure about that? This is the text sent out from the government in it's referendum leaflet prior to the vote. As you can see, it was clearly never "advisory", well, perhaps to some of the people that didn't get the result they wanted afterwards it was..... Anyway, it will be happen no matter how many undemocratic idiots march, and it will be the best thing to happen to the UK for many years to come!daveid wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 6:33 pmSo did the leavers...
Although I voted to stay I don't think a march is going to help other than draw attention to some of the issues.
A generation and a half of anti - European propaganda from the Murdoch press will take more than a few marches to eradicate.
What I find most scary is how mob rule has trumped the democratic process. Regardless of the vote outcome, the referendum is only advisory...yet here we are.

As to "undemocratic idiots marching" how utterly absurd. Most of the privileges we take for granted were the result of marches and protests over the decades and before. People still have a right to protest and march, or perhaps you'd rather live in North Korea where the only marching done is by the hypnotised brainwashed military and Kim Il-c***'s cheerleaders and sycophants.

JSDOUVRES wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 11:32 pmSo marching and protesting against a democratic process and result is democratic in itself is it? I would call it the exact opposite personally but each to their own.Neilatrone wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 10:57 pmSorry I'm not British but the result of the referendum was "advisory" in law. Also, I wouldn't agree that anyone taking part in a march is "undemocratic", that wouldn't make sense!
And this referendum was not advisory, the government clearly stated on many occasions prior to it taking place that they would implement the result which is exactly what they are doing. About time people accepted that and stopped the whining.
Democracy is seriously under threat from the far left whom have a serious problem when things don't go their way, simply because they are so convinced they hold some kind of "moral high ground" all the time when the opposite is true. Pathetic. We even have anti Trump protests here in the UK! Yet little or nothing against the worlds biggest dictators and human rights violators. Hypocrisy at it's best all over and quite shameful. I'd love to have been in London this weekend for a good laugh but am busy unfortunately!
Well said JSDOUVRES - I wish I could join the March against democracy this weekend too, but I'm doing my nails
in suits or sequins/or twin sets and pearls

Democracy under threat from the far left? That's a good one. Did you get that in a Christmas cracker with a silly hat?

Best thing that has happened in this country for decades, sooner we are out of the EU the better.

Oh, I learned a lesson
from the twentieth century
I don't think we should just dismiss
After one hundred years
of inhumanity
the lesson that I learned was this
Sometimes the solution
is worse than the problem
Let's stay together
Well I bought a ticket
to the revolution
and I cheered when the statues fell
Everyone came
to destroy what was wicked
but they killed off what was good as well
Sometimes the solution
is worse than the problem
Let's stay together
Stay with me
this century
Together we're better
Oh, I learned a lesson
from the twentieth century
It may be somewhat hit or miss
If you've certainty
'bout the way it's all meant to be
the lesson that you need is this
Sometimes the solution
is worse than the problem

2 reasons for me, Immigration has got completely out of hand and secondly as we are in the EU we are obliged to give aid to other countries left right and centre, yet we do nothing for our own people, more homeless than ever and the countries biggest success story is the increase in food banks!
We should have quit the EU years ago.

Re: Pet Shop Boys say NO to Brexit
I don't see why leaving Europe will change this. There will still be just as much immigration, just less from Europe. As long as English workers refuse to do the work we normally give to immigrants, there will always be a call for foreign workers. I agree that food banks are a complete disgrace and are the net result of the impoverishment and industrial decline created by the economic terrorism and social upheaval unleashed by Thatcher and underwritten by every PM since, regardless of party. We hear all about the negative scare stories of EU policy, but little about the positives, such as the grants that deprived regions such as South Wales and Cornwall were receiving, and which will now be taken away. That's the sick thing about this - these places that benefit most from EU funding are the very places that by and large voted out. Turkeys do vote for Christmas and it's the result of lies spread through the right-wing xenophobic anti-democratic Murdoch press, he who dictated the terms of democracy, to Mrs Thatcher in 1981 and Tony Blair in 1995. Believe me, whatever's wrong now will only get far worse.Gary1962 wrote: Wed 22 Mar 2017, 1:15 pm2 reasons for me, Immigration has got completely out of hand and secondly as we are in the EU we are obliged to give aid to other countries left right and centre, yet we do nothing for our own people, more homeless than ever and the countries biggest success story is the increase in food banks!

I think part of what people object to is the conduct of the Leave side, even after they've won (and yes, both sides were awful). But the Leave camp are still so angry. The 48% of those who voted who voted Remain should not be told to put up and shut up in the way that they are.Undertaker wrote: Tue 21 Mar 2017, 4:21 pm Pathetic this is still going on. Remainers lost.
Man City let my bet down Sunday for £1,200. Replay it or i'll march down the road in the cold.
Note that Nigel Farage said, before the referendum, that a close win for Remain would not be the end of the fight. Now that it's a close win for Leave, any protest, questioning or dissent is called "remoaning", "denying the will of The People" and, far worse, "unpatriotic".
I will not shut up. I am not unpatriotic. 52% of voters who turned up do not have a monopoly on patriotism.
Before the vote, my parter (who works in higher education) and I spoke to an official Leave campaign group on Chiswick High Road. The educated man in his 30s wasn't interested in my partner's concerns about the effect of leaving on the HE sector. We agreed to disagree, but as we walked off he yelled at us "IT'S A PITY YOU DON'T LOVE BRITAIN!!"
Due to this I feel it is not pathetic to want to still have my voice heard, and be able to have opinions without being shouted down by a "massive overwhelming majority". Of 52/48. Of those who turned up.

This is how fascism begins. Nuance goes out the window and is replaced with slogans that dissipate on the wind.Harry wrote: Wed 22 Mar 2017, 1:47 pmI think part of what people object to is the conduct of the Leave side, even after they've won (and yes, both sides were awful). Re: Pet Shop Boys say NO to Brexit
It is the far left that are orchestrating the attack on Brexit and everything to do with it, and why? Because they are so stuck up and sure of themselves and the fact they feel they hold the moral high ground on everything and when democratic political processes go against them they simply refuse to accept it and act in bigotted and faschist ways. We have seen it in the UK and in America recently. If people live in a demcoracy then they have to accept the democratic process whether they get the result they want or not, protesting against this is both disturbing and a serious attack on democracy and all it can lead to is utter carnage.daveid wrote: Wed 22 Mar 2017, 10:19 am Democracy under threat from the far left? The far left and far right (or any extreme group) are the real dangers to the world, people tend to focus on the far right when in fact it is the far left that are in a position to do far more harm as people tend to ignore them and see them as acceptable when they absolutely are not with the massive harm they can do whereas the far right are thankfully and correctly seen for exactly what they are and will never have the power to influence anything significantly. Clearly you are left wing and won't accept that which doesn't come as much of a surprise of course.
