Indubitably of their finest songs (on some days, their best), as shown by it still sounding great whether covered by Carter USM, Liza or karaoke style in Saltburn. I assume it started life as one of the sleaze tracks they mention in the Imagine documentary but the slower tempo of the Actually version allows the contradictory emotions of the protagonist to be expressed with more time and space - notably shown in Saltburn as the character has an epiphany in real time.
Extra credit for Neil's 'driving' in the video and trolling Tubs Tarbuck.

They had some great remixer names at the start of their career ! Shep Pettibone, Francois Kervokian, Julian Mendelsohn, Arthur Barker.
It just made it even more magical for me !

Sadly here in the US, EMI America refused to release the song as a single because their marketing department thought it was about a (gay) male prostitute and they were afraid the record buying public would never buy a PSB single or album again.

I’m criss-crossing threads here but Rent was an instant classic for me.
I almost wore my copy of Actually out with the amount of times I would rewind and play it. The audio quality was absolutely terrible on the little tape player I had but that didn’t take anything away from me loving this song.
Deceptively simple but all the more impressive because of that - no distractions, just pure heartfelt beauty. I still think it’s one of the best songs of all time.
Agreed with previous comments about the extended remixes - esp the Francois Kervorkian remixes.

Aside from Bobby O demo there is also XFM version from 2003 which reveals the original Hi-NRG nature of this song - check it out.
