I read lengthy interviews with the PSB as they described what certain particular songs were about. This shattered my perception of what the songs were about, the songs I've been humming to for years and only too find out that it's about something else entirely! I dunno, it's kinda ruined the song in my eyes. I think PSB should take a leaf out of Brian May's book and not explain what songs are about. It's upto the listener to perceive what they are about.
Take 'To Speak Is A Sin' for example. I was convinced it was about having an affair.
Heh, I'll guess I'll just skip ahead if I see the PSB spilling the beans in future.

'I'm With Stupid' is obvious though, so that doesn't count.
What do you think? Are there any songs that you have mis-interpreted?

well I saw a documentary on TV before nightlife came about about a sort of goth subculture where there were people who have a sort of vampire/blood fetish.they actualy drink and bite other willing partners and drink their blood, so obviously when I heard vampires it seemed on the surface to be exactly about that.

later neil stated the song was actually about psychic vampires, people who sort bring you down by taking the life out of you.

No, as I don't believe that songs can be misinterpreted. If you can justify them they're pretty much open to all kinds of readings, unless the lyrics are a bit basic in the first place, and don't have any depth. But even this can be debated. Nickname's always interpreting everything for instance.

You could always interpret What Keeps Mankind Alive (be sure to swot up on Brecht though) or The Sound of the Atom Splitting for a laugh.

I didn't have a clue! Mind you, I was convinced George Michael was straight. And you've heard it here first..although I despise Robbie Williams, I still think he's straight but just has feminine characteristics.

I only found out not long ago that Michael Stipe was gay. I'm not kidding. Maybe a pattern is showing here..

I never was disappointed by the real meaning of the songs Neil explained in the interviews 'cause nearly always I understood the lyrics just the way Neil explained them - for example, 'King's cross', 'Two divided by zero' and a lot of others.

Is that a really big difference to an affair? Or do you know other Neil's interpretation?

At a certain point I try to stop reading the liner notes that came with the reissues for this reason. Luckily I've quite a selective memory so I can't even tell you which explanations dissapointed me:-).

As a non native English speaker I think it's even easier to make up your own interpretations. I like it that way.
