They had a few months to plan this last edition. Longer actually if you consider the fact that BBC execs must have decided its fate long before the announcement was made.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure how they could have summarised the 'relevance' of TOTP in 50 mins, but from last night's evidence that was NOT the way. It felt rushed, forced and didn't really capture just a small percentage of what it meant to people. I mean for god's sake, the 70s showed a couple of clips from the the glam period as a summary of the 70s. The was true same for the other decades as well...

I can't say I'm surprised that the boys didn't even show up once., given the overall slapdash nature of the final product. Maybe it didn't help that Neil called the powers that be, wankers, but good on him anyway, because that's what they are. At least we won't have to look at that blonde hair on a stick, Fearne Cotton anymore... or that Harpie Bowman.

The sad thing about the demise of TOTP, is now there is no weekly music chart-based show on TV anymore! Also, CD:UK and the Saturday morning kids' shows have gone now too, so all we have left now is Popworld for our weekly dose of music, chat, interviews & 'live' performances, and since Simon & Miquita left that has gone a bit downhill, that will probably be next to be axed. It's a shame as there's hardly any music-related shows on TV now for bands/groups to be on and that is one thing that saddens me the most about the end of TOTP.

TOTP may have had it's problems, but there's far more deserving programmes on TV that should be axed (Last Of The Summer Wine anyone?). In my opinion, TOTP did what it said on the tin, it showcased the biggest hits of the week and everyone from AC-DC to ZZ Top appeared on the programme over it's 42 years. The BBC have wanted to get rid of TOTP for years, the 1st kick in the teeth was moving it to Fridays in 1996, and putting it up against Coronation Street - which is suicide for any show, even Eastenders would suffer up against Corrie.

Next mistake was axing the Saturday night repeat, as a lot of people I knew used to watch it when they got home from going out before going to bed. Moving it to BBC2 on Sundays was the next mistake, as a lot of poeple just forgot it was on and so didn't get to see it. Finally, BBC2 kept moving it around whenever there was a special event on at the time, such as The Olympics, Commonwealth Games etc and on several occasions it was on Monday nights, so regular viewers on a Sunday would miss out when the show was moved to Mondays. It's a sad end to a national institution. TOTP is dead - long live TOTP!

Wet Wet Wet and Bryan Adams had two of the biggest hits in UK chart history. Why would the TOTP website trumpet that neither will be shown in the final edition of the show? Wasn't the whole point of TOTP that it was about hits? No wonder the show lost its way.

Fully agreed! I really fail to see why Bryan Adams has to ridiculized this way. I'm not his biggest fan, but he certainly made some great songs. And he was one of the first rock singers to appear on a dance record (Don't Give Up by Chicane).

It's also ridiculous that PSB weren't shown at all... apparently 37 Top 20 hits (not counting Absolutely fabulous and the collaborations) is not enough to be featured...

The more fluffy the last TOTP became, the more I actually felt rather sad at its demise. The end clip of Savile turning out the lights was so mock-poignant, it was actually very poignant indeed. I did laugh, though, when Savile reflected on a Stones clip and said 'only the BBC could have lost that footage'.

I think it would have been better to construct a chart of the Top 50 acts by number of appearances on the programme and to have those acts that were still alive perform live in 2006. OK - Cliff Richard, Shakin Stevens and Madness would have been up there, and maybe even PSB (no doubt some fan will have researched their ranking in this regard) but at least that would have been a sensible and less arbitrary way of selecting the final countdown. And maybe presented by the hosts with the most frequent appearances too.
