Rank the B-sides!

#1 Post by profile790 »

After last year's Rank The Singles survey, to be found here viewtopic.php?t=8058, I would like to launch a similar topic: the ultimate test to determine the best Pet Shop Boys B-side so far :D

Before this topic was opened, I had a long discussion with some fans about which tracks should be considered B-sides and which ones shouldn't. In the end I used the following definition: a Pet Shop Boys B-side is a track that appeared on a Pet Shop Boys single, cd-single or dvd-single (regardless in which country) and that didn't appear on or as a Pet Shop Boys-single or on a Pet Shop Boys-album (regardless whether it's an alternative version), on the day the mentioned Pet Shop Boys-single was released.

I am aware that this definition is subject of discussion, but I had to draw the line somewhere. For more explanation about the definition, check viewtopic.php?p=246512&highlight=#246512

Enough explanation, it's time for the big request. Below is a list of no less than 62 tracks.

- Please rank all these tracks from good to bad!
- Start with the B-side you like most, end up with your least favourite one.
- Please rate ALL tracks, not just a top 10.
- Don't give tracks the same rating. You can't have two number 18's, for instance. One has to be #19 then.
- In case you don't know a track, please state in your post which tracks these are.
- Don't vote for tracks you don't know. For instance: if you don't know 4 tracks, just compile a Top 58.

These guidelines will make it easier to process the results and compile the ultimate PSB singles chart. Please take your time and please note that it can take quite some time to compile a proper Top 62. Don't hurry to post your list over here. Way before I will close the survey, I will alert you.

Hmm, just a technical question - how about Overture To Performance and Music For Boys 2 & 3? :) And In The Night 1995? Well I know it's just a remake, but you count Paninaro '95 as a single after all... :)

In The Night 1995 is an alternative version of a song that appeared on a PSB single AND album before. Overture To Performance is an alternative version of many old PSB singles mixed together. Thing is... I had to draw the line somewhere, and I decided to use the definition I gave.

Yes, but read the definition above. The original was already released on Please.

Surely the PSB themselves have more pull on this than some random stranger on the Internet? Violence is on Alternative and is thus considered by the artists as an official PSB B side.

*sigh* If you don't like the definition, don't participate, open your own topic, but take your complaints elsewhere.

I already explained that I had to draw the line somewhere. If I add Violence, why not In The Night 1995, In Private, Break 4 Love, Can You Forgive Her (swing version) etc... as well.

Question: What makes NTFT (from BT) and PRL (from Disco 3) exceptions?

Positive role model was released as a b-side on the London single before Disco 3 came out.

I think NTFT is included because Potemkin is not a Pet Shop Boys release.

But why is B4L missing?
