The Million Dollar (Pound) Question...

#1 Post by Danimal »

OK, so many members of this forum are running around like chickens with their heads cut-off because PSB are reissuing their albums as single discs. The question is: are the Further Listening disc versions being deleted or are they just trying to offer a budget alternative to the more expensive, fan-oriented deluxe versions which will remain in print after all?
Just a thought...

I wonder what is more lucrative for the PSB numbers wise. the hardcore audience buying their reissues with further listening or the general public who buys the single disc versions.

I would think they sell more to the hardcore fanbase than the adverage buyer and as such would keep up with the reissue concept.

Well, I always thought that deleting the original releases was stupid, since non-fans aren't going to be interested in Further Listening CD's. So I applaud the decision to re-issue the albums in single disc format - preferably at a budgeted price.

yeah but I wonder the ratio of new buyers to hardcore audience in relation to going with one format over the other.

I agree with Blue Swan. For the general public, it makes more sense to reissue the remastered albums as 1 CD units. As fans, we've had plenty of time to buy the double CD sets, and there will always be plenty of used copies around now too... so I don't think it's that much of a big deal deleting them now.

For example, if Mr Joe Public wants to by the album with "Go West" on it, there's a good chance he'll NOT buy the double CD of Very, when all he wants is the single CD.

I think this whole concept of releasing single disc budget issues, is part of a bigger EMI strategy to milk the PSB back catalogue as good as possible. The FL-issues were aimed at fans, the single discs are aimed at the general audience.

The next step will be issuing them as beer glass mats for the PSB-haters.

Ok guys n gals, lets face it. The re-issues (further listening) are now 5 years old. The chances of EMI printing another run are prtty slim as there are still a lot of copies of the original batch floating about.

I am hoping thatdown the line, EMI will do whatthey have done with the Depeche Mode remasters and offer 5.1 mixes of the albums with bonus dvds including documentaries, totp performances, rare footage etc, plus videos from the relevant album.

Looking back, at the time the re:issues were fantastic, but by today's standards they are pretty poor in comparison to other artists offeringS.

I believe that these were originally aimed at us fans. A smattering of course being picked up by the casual listener! Single disc issues make far more sense economically for EMI. It was a special treat for us, which no doubt would have cost PSB more than what they probably made from them!

I would personally have preffered single box sets similar to the ones Erasure offered, there are so many PSB mixes unavailable on cd it's untrue!

Anyways, thats where i stand on the matter!

I'm not bothered what they do as long as they release the Nightlife and Release FL discs!

Wasn't a one disc release of Relentless supposed to be coming out an' all?

I don't see any problems with the re-issues. and as for the 2 disc versions, I can' t think of any better re-issue packages out there. Sure there are the 5.1 mixes of other artists out there, but a reissue in that avenue should be targeted at the hi-fi market, by buyers who obviously have money to spare and can just buy it again for that puropse. Had Depeche Mode stuck to offering demos, live and unreleased tracks on the bonus disc they would be essential reissues for the hardcore fan. The 5.1 remix is a great idea, but not really my bag.
Bowie's re-issues have been good, but considering his stuff was being restored from 70's master tapes, there is not much to compare there. The Cure reissues have been good too, but the booklets are nowhere near as good as the ones for PSB.
Funny, I remember Neil saying that the 2 disc versions were supposed to cost the same as the single discs.

LOL, perhaps. But do PSB hating beer drinkers really wanna look at a yawning Neil Tennant every time they lift their glass? :D

I think reissuing the old albums in single disc form is a great thing to do. It puts them out there for new fans at a price that is nice.

However, Nightlife and Release should be issued in the deluxe FL versions for the core fan base. The prospect that the deluxe FL versions will be axed, for those albums that have not been issued in this format, is why people are " running around like chickens with their heads cut-off " .

I have the new DM reissues and they are very good. I love the 5.1 mixes!

But the DM booklets are crap, a waste of paper. The FL booklets are a million times better. 8) I would like to see the FL versions( both discs) done in DTS 5.1 mixes but keep all the same songs. The videos and documentry I can do without.
