The new PSB fans' project - Attribute re-loaded ?...

#1 Post by RafBoy »

Dear PSB fans,

As many of you already know - I was responsible for PSB fans Tribute album project called ATTRIBUTE back in 2000/2001/2002.
The actual PSB fans tribute album idea started probably around 1997/1998 on the old Introspective mailing list - as far as I remember it was right after Bilingual release.
In 2000 I decided to take the project in my hands - and I did everything possible to make it finally happen. So - I have collected probably around 50 cover versions of PSB songs recorded by fans from all over the world. Some of them were outstanding quality, some of them sounded not so perfect, but it doeasn't really matter now...
As the project was supposed to be 2CD release - we had to select around 16 tracks for CD1 and CD2 (there was a voting process), the rest of the tracks was supposed to be available on CD2 in mp3 form only...
In the end all the tracks that were suppose to end as CD Audio tracks were mastered by Massimo "Spee" Spinneti from Italy.
Then somebody was supposed to help me with the graphic design, CD pressing etc. Many people offered their help - but in the end - it was NEVER finnished... I regret this till now, because I do feel these tracks deserve to be heard by the FANS!
That's why I decided to write this messege to you. I'm going to post it on all 3 PSB forums - because I want to gather the attention of as many fans as possible.
Why? Because I have fresh IDEA! But I need your help to make it happen...

First of all, I think that idea of releaseing a Tribute CD is so 1990s... Actually, PSB have at least 2 or 3 other tribute albums released, they have also PSB Tribute band - Pet Shop Noise, and finally West End Girls released their album this year. So I don't think idea of CD release doesn't make sense, but...

We are living now in the internet times. That's why I think this project should be 100% internet based. So my idea is following:
I think that we should create internet website where PSB fans will be able to submite their PSB covers all the times. I think there might be 3 sections: COVERS / REMIXES / PSB inspired/influenced/sounding tracks (so the tracks like My Robot Friend's "We are the Pet Shop Boys" could also be submited there).
There hundreds of PSB fans recording music. Some of them are really talanted. You would be really surprised by quality of these recordings - believe me;-)
This could be very orginal tribute project - I think NO OTHER BAND has something like that. Big big difference to all other tribute-type project would be the fact that the project LIVE - it would be evolving all the time, as there will be more and more tracks submited. Also there might be kind of online chart of PSB covers - based on ratings/votes provided by fans who listened to the covers. So it will give a nice opportunity to PSB fans to show their talents.
I know this sounds big and very hard to do... but I know it's not impossible to do!
Many of you are talented webdesigners, coders etc. - who could made this website happen. Maybe we could get Redman (former PSB webmaster) involved?

We can start it simple - and continue to develop the website as the project grows.
We have already at least 50 tracks to put there. I can provide the tracks and info about the arists. We can also use the orginal website URL: http://www.attribute.org
All we actually need to start - is some webspace to store all the tracks, and somebody who would re-design the website.

What do you think about this idea? Please post your opinions here.
If you feel you want to get involved in the building the website project - please contact me via PM on my e-mai: rafboy7@o2.pl (pleaee use word "ATTRIBUTE" in the subject).

Let's see what happens... Let the PSB music play forever!

yours,
Rafal

This is a fantastic idea but i can see Emi closing it down due to copyright issues.

I hope they don't though.

Hi, as far as I know - everybody is free to cover any song he wants. You can record it and perform it - and until you are not selling it - you are ok. If you want to sell it - then PSB are going to get their royalities anyway - so it's usualy not a problem as well.
But this project is not meant to be for money etc. - so I don't see any problems with that. It can only give our boys good publicity if it's successful;-)
Anyway - before we start - we can try to contact N&C via official site and ask them what they think about it... Could be nice if they could comment on some of the covers - leave their opinion on the website. I think it's possible.

Sounds like a fantastic project! You can count on West End Boys for support and submissions!

I'm a graphic designer by trade, so I would love to help with the website.

Great idea!

Erm... I'd really like to
A) do my track again (Was that what it was) or
B) Replace it with Do I have to which I did some time ago or
C) Make a new track

I think you might indeed get copyright issues. It doesn't matter who performs a certain track you 'give away' on the internet, the song itself is written by PSB and so they will miss out on some cash. But hey, maybe PSB have become milder with age, good luck!

Hi,

First of all, do not offer new - more tracks etc. It's much to early.
The most important thing at the mom is to develop a platform/website to share already existing tracks. So I would really appreciate if somebody could take care of the technical part, because so far nobody offered his help..
