particular case studies chosen (Madonna, Morrissey, Annie Lennox, The Pet Shop Boys, and ... (Impressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, etc. ....
I’m studying at a university that has access to CJO… I had a look at the article and it turns out that there are several books being reviewed. Postmodern Music / Postmodern Thought is just the first one (it’s a good book though if you’re interested in that sort of academic stuff; I’ve used it for a couple of essays). The one with PSB in it is called Settling the Pop Score and is written by Stan Hawkins.
Here‘s a bit of the paragraph that mentions PSB: “Five case studies are presented from 1980s British and American pop, alongside an introductory chapter which sets out the general methodology and issues to be addressed. The particular case studies chosen (Madonna, Morrissey, Annie Lennox, The Pet Shop Boys, and Prince) are comparable in terms of period and their relationship to the newly emergent music video (MTV), while allowing discussion of a range of identity issues: namely gender, sexuality, and race.”
The bit about “(Impressionism, Symbolism, Cubism, Dadaism, Surrealism, etc.)” is from a review of a book called Between Montmartre and the Mudd Club: Popular Music and the Avant-Garde. So, PSB and cubism just happened to be mentioned in the same article.
Hope this has helped.
I’ll think check out Settling the Pop Score next time I’m at the uni library...
