Upconverting DVD players

Hi all,
Does anybody know how (and how well) upconverting DVD players work? The claim is that they can upconvert standard DVDs to near hidef levels "breathing new life" into standard DVDs. I've heard it said that standard NTSC DVDs actually contain 530 lines of definition even though standard DVD players only display 480 lines, so I guess it's possible that these upconverting players simply show the extra lines. Otherwise, I don't see how this technology works. After all, a player can't insert extra information that's not encoded on the disc. Thoughts?

A standard DVD player (not HD) with an HDMI port. I have upscaling on my receiver, but don't seem to notice a difference when I switch it to 720p.

I don't know much about all the teck stuff

but, I was sure that you have to have a Tv that has the high definition in it too for it to work as well. (In the UK you have to).

Have you tried different discs in your player? As we have got a HDMI DVD Player and notice some discs are better than others. (Some you can see the pixels). But, the ones it's ok with we can notice a difference in the picture and sound.

Hmm, not sure if you could upconvert. I dont think you can make a regular DVD play like a HD quality DVd with a different DVD player.

Yeah I've noticed the up converting DVD players too. Some are boasting it converts the signal to 1080p. I know DVD's look better than SD tv so I suppose it's possible that the image looks much better than your regular DVD player but probably not quite good as an HD broadcast. The DVD itself probably plays a big part as newer movies are much more crisp unless it's an older movie that's been restored.

Amazingly, these players arn't expensive either, most were $99.
