anyone know a decent, ideally free, DVD rip programme?
Thank you very much!

DVDShrink if you want to rip the DVD files to hard drive and/or burn a copy DVD. It's an excellent free program.
Official site:

The download isn't hosted on the site due to legal reasons, but a quick google will bring you the file. The most recent release is V3.2.0.15 so look for that file to download.

For disc images and VOBs (not necessarily shrinking but keeping the original build of the DVD), I would most certianly recommend
DVD Decrypter
