Gerhard Richter

#1 Post by ssss1 »

Hi,
I would really be interested in buying that Gerhard Richter picture - the one which is made up of loads of coloured squares.
Anyone know if a print or canvas version is available to buy anywhere? I think the original would be out of my price range
:D
Thanks.

Nice try, but it would have to be an exact replica.

The coolest thing about Richter's colored square canvases: when you stand close to one in real life, an optical illusion occurs. In the white space where the squares' 4 corners meet, you see faint grey circles, seeming to hover in the corner of your eyes. But they're not there, it's a trick of the eye and an optical illusion that's quite intentional. He's amazing. My favorite living artist.

I had a similar optical illusion when i was looking for Pet Shop Boys CD's in the stores. Thought I saw some! Sorry to hijack your thread. Back to the art...

Funny, nobody would talk about Richter if Neil hadn't mentioned him.

Ohh, I actually went to see the Richter exhibition today at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

http://www.npg.org.uk:8080/richter/index.htm

It's well worth a look. It's a selection of his portraits from 1962 (I think?) onwards and is really cool. Basically, he created the paintings from photos, but then blurred the images to capture the idea that portraits are imperfect views of an image. It was very interesting stuff- in places it made you think that your eyesight was going, but it was actualy very interesting. I'd definitely recommend it. 8)

And yes, I went to check it out because of the lyrics. I came to the conclusion that although Neil said I don't have to have one on my wall, actually, I'd quite like one. If I could afford it.

I would, if anyone were interested! He's tremendous, and Neil's mention is just topical icing on the cake.

I would like to see it as well as I am interested in modern arts.

And btw. I have read 'The Italian Boy' ...

Pani, you're right - I'd never heard of Gerhard before Neil mentioned him.
But seeing the work I mentioned in the opening question - it really appeals to me.
It's bright, warm and colourful. It's not drab and unmoving as a lot of art is.
If I went into someone's home and saw that on the wall, it would immediately draw my attention (I would then obviously distract them and steal it)! :shifty:
