I'm browsing through reviews of Robert Christgau and see he gave Foxbase alpha a Dud and So Tough an A-? How does that happen?

Just found he gave the recent Lily Allen album an "A" (great album yes, don't know if it's that great), yet he gives the Bird and the Bee a "cut" meaning only one good track. Would like to hear an explanation of this.

I don't understand that grading system. Is ** better or worse than A? And what exactly means the scissors?

I think that So Tough is a much better album, by the way. It's easily the best Saint Etienne record.

I agree So Tough is the better album. But I think it's hard to justify So Tough being a tops album and FA a complete dud!

Music critics are frustrating. I largely stay far away from magazines like Rolling Stone. But this guy is supposedly one of the top music critics of all time. And he is referenced by people on here from time to time. So I think it's fair to discuss some of his reviews I find inexplicable.
