Stalling at 31. A brand new track, which is actually very very good. Great production and exactly the kind of sound that the fans like. Madonna's last effort stalling at SEVENTY THREE (!!) also. It's not boding well for established acts having "hits" anymore. ANy new PSB lead single is going to have to have one hell of a marketing campaign to even dent the top 40.

A big selling album is still possible off the back of a dissapointing chart placing (Keane) so its not the end of the world, im just really really surprised with the kylie track. If it were Cheryl "Im having that f***ing lolly or ahm gannae punch ya ha'way ya bastad" Cole singing it, it would be a nailed on top 5.

Maybe the gayers are all on holiday.

Did the Kylie track get a lot of radio play? If not maybe it's not so surprising.

No it didn't. It was a surprise release so I assume a lot of people didn't even realise it had even been releasesd!

Not to be contrarian, but I don't agree with the song being very good. I actually think it's average, even a bit boring, since the melody is so unremarkable. Also, as agent doris said, the song just had no hype built up around its release, so the low entrance doesn't surprise me.

Although Kylie doesn't look it, she's in the same boat as Pet Shop Boys, Madonna, Ultravox and all those artists from the 1980s being seen a certain way. It would be like pop acts from the 50's and 60's trying to get a look in when Pet Shop Boys, Madonna etc were just starting.

I'm from abroad and might be getting a little older but what's exactly the UK top 40 filled with these days? Along with Rihanna releasing a new single every week of the year since 2005 there doesn't seem to be such a flood of new pop music around these days...

I don't think they've (dis)graced the UK top 40 in several years. I was talking about rap and what purports to be RnB these days.

Maybe I'm just showing my age, but the UK charts are the worst they've been in a long, long time. Even new music from established artists is subpar, i.e. Madonna's last three singles, Timebomb, etc.

We're just getting old. Simple as that

If Top Of The Pops were still on, we'd be tutting like our parents did back in the day

I think we're in a situation like the 60s and early 70s where singles were primarily bought by young people and albums were bought by adults, so with the exception of The Beatles who appealed to both audiences, the charts were very different from each other.

Older people still prefer physical formats, or at least prefer to buy download albums because they are seen as better value than buying each track at 99p. Kids will want to just buy the one song they want - I used to be like that - just buying singles for a couple of years until I started following particular artists so bought their albums. By the time I was 19/20 I was regularly buying albums. I believe it will be the same now as it was then.

True, the odds are against it. But it's not inconceivable. The Beach Boys had a #1 U.S./Australia hit (U.K. #25 and Top 10 in several nations on the continent) with "Kokomo" in 1988. And I think the odds of a significant PSB hit in the U.K. in 2012 are at least a little better than a #1 Beach Boys hit in the U.S. in 1988.

But, to be honest (and I do hate to say it), I wouldn't bet my paycheck on a Top 10 showing. In fact, at this point I would consider Top 20 a triumph.
