Finally a sequel to 69 Love Songs! Are there any other Stephin Merritt fans here? Unfortunately this new album is something of a disappointment – while his lyrics are as good as ever, his melodies are getting very repetitive and the baroque arrangements have lost their novelty value a while ago too. As somebody who adores Get Lost, Charm Of The Highway Strip and the first Future Bible Heroes, this sounds a bit tepid and uninspired.
One huge exception though: I Thought You Were My Boyfriend is probablt the best ever synth pop song to not feature any synths.

Pure fiction, I'm afraid. I interviewed him over the phone on Monday – he really is one of the worst interviewees in the world – and he's currently working on:
- A new The 6ths album (perhaps Neil will guest on that – Merritt didn't want to reveal any of the vocalists)
- A remix ep of songs from i
- An opera called Peach Blossom Fan that opened in April and is now being recorded in the studio
- A Gothic Archies album for which he will record one song every year - it will be out in 2008 or 2009.

Have you heard Get Lost (1995) or The Charm Of The Highway Strip (1994)? They are truly sublime records. It was only after that when Merritt lost his faith in synth-pop and started to mimic every musical genre on Earth with very varied results.Leeds City Boy wrote:The Future Bible Heroes album was good at best but I think everything Magnetic Fields is so over-rated..
