Just found an old PSB scrap book stuffed with old reviews, pics, interviews, etc.

Thought I’d post the NME review of the Hacienda gig you

I’ve read a lot worse reviews tbh, and in many ways PSB were a slightly odd choice for a Hacienda birthday.

"Duran Duran are dead".... and the year after they made one of the greatest comebacks ever.
"The Smiths releveant"... that died out
PSB out of date/touch and the year after they hit back with a masterpiece of an album and yet another monster hit.
History has not been kind to this review.

The monster hit they played at that concert. Paul Lester should have seen it coming...

As George Harrison put it, he was "stuck inside a cloud".

Yeah the Duran comment aged appallingly. O.W. was released just seven/eight months later depending on what side of the pond you are on and blew the comment out of the water.

Oh, very cool, thanks very much for sharing that! A "return to form" of NME review pomposity.

Kind of makes you realize how short-term we used to think back in the bad old days, when a band could reliably be expected to go tits up after three singles if they were lucky. And here we all are today...!

I'm now gonna go and proudly embrace my inner Sharon. :D
For your own good, call me tonight.

Just for the sake of it, make sure you're always frowning. :|
It shows the world that you've got substance and depth.

Pretty sure this is Melody Maker.

He is right about their era of chart domination being more or less over but interesting that it's the dance acts like Prodigy he cites, whereas in reality the charts were a far broader church in the 90s, including the indie groups that the Maker championed who would start having big hits.

It is Melody Maker. Don't want to sound like a geek but you can tell by the font.

(UK middle class) a pej. generic term for a working-class young woman regarded as overly flashy and socially unacceptable; a female Kevin n.

Well they've outlived so many reviews like this that are more attacks on culture/identity than anything else. (In this case the tone isn't fully uncomplimentary, though)

Interesting that Prodigy is offered as some kind of successor for acceptable coolness. Wonder what the leader board looks like these days.

PSB release catalogs of artwork, lyrics books, filmclip collections, etc on a regular basis celebrating their culture and identity, so I guess the argument is resolved 🙃
