"New York City boy" - a plethora of edits

Took me a bit to find an actual promo with "US Radio Edits" #1 and #2, which are unique yet official. Once I finally got them and compared them with everything else, turns out there's at least six different edits of this single, including a rather obscure Mexican one, which seems to be a "fixed" version of US Radio Edit #1, and best of the three variations when taking the PopArt mix into account, which seems to be the one for posterity. Anyone knows why they bothered so much with this?

I think the UK radio edit is the best version. I don’t understand why compilations have the US edit version, which misses out the ‘When evening calls…’ section. I think that’s the best bit!

Mostly around the 2:10 mark - the PopArt mix is the worst, and has a weird cut straight to the choir vocals, instead of the smooth piano breakdown compared to the other two. MX Edit and US Edit #1 are verrrrry similar, but while comparing the two, I discovered the MX Edit uses a different chorus before the piano breakdown, and it's even better. So yeah, that's the best of the three.

And are the "US radio edit" versions on PopArt, Ultimate and Smash any different from each other?

Yep, this edit has been unchanged ever since 2003.

I was a bit incorrect in my description with the differences, the Mexican edit is actually 3:50 and is similar to Edit #2. Again, the only difference is the chorus. Got them all a bit mixed up

So it's actually Edit #1 ~ PopArt Mix and Edit #2 ~ Mexico Edit.

I never thought they got the arrangement right on that one. the verse parts to me rose to the challenge and sound kind of bright lush and glorious but then when it got to the chorus it sort of lost energy and the out of place guitar riffing comes in along with the background vocals that sounded too low and dull.

I thought it could have used those bright international horn blasts you hear on Saturday night...although I know that song isnt a fave with many here.

Yeah, but I quite prefer the original UK radio edit as well. A lot is going on in this version. Just like the album version, keeping every break in its development. Just shorter.
In the US radio edit(s) it's quite straightforward and although it's even shorter than the UK version, it tends to get boring.

This is probably the best explanation for this.
They should have asked Almighty to edit their definitive remix of the track to release it as the single version. It would have certainly been better than any of those edits.
