Neil must’ve told this story a thousand times, but I love when he talks about recording with Dusty and when she first arrived at the studio asked Neil and Chris “How do you want me to sound?” and the boys looked at each other and then responded “like Dusty Springfield!” And she says “oh ok yeah I can do that.”

Actually - and happy to start a new thread if this is too OT - but I've never quite believed or understood the other story they always tell about her wanting to record Nothing Has Been Proved syllable by syllable. Surely that would have made for an extremely strange sounding vocal with really unnatural transitions between all the words, if they were able to edit them together in the first place. If they mean she wanted to overdub the odd syllable then I guess that makes sense, but...the whole song? Surely this isn't what actually happened?

I've NEVER understood this story either. Certainly the subtle way the tail end of words naturally transition into each other when singing a phrase all in one continuous take would prohibit a word-by-word (or syllable-by-syllable) method from being effective? There must be something that's being lost in translation here.

Neil's a storyteller. I was raised by one. There's no story isn't improved with a bit of embellishment and we mostly love to hear it. It was probably word by word at the very worst, most likely line by line or even verse by verse.
