Should Pet Shop Boys do this?

Today, New Order announced they're reissuing their first 3 albums on Blu-ray.
Featuring these mixes of each album:
● Dolby Atmos
● DTS-HD 5.1 Surround Sound
● 96kHz/24bit PCM Stereo
● Instrumental
Also includes 2 disc CD set of the album and it's previously released bonus disc of rarities.

Last week The Human League released Dare on Blu-ray.
The mixes are:
● Dolby Atmos Mix (48 kHz / 24-bit)
● 5.1 Surround Mix (48 kHz / 24-bit)
● Dolby Atmos Mix Instrumental (48 kHz / 24-bit)
● 5.1 Surround Mix Instrumental (48 kHz / 24-bit)
● Original 1981 Stereo Mix (48 kHz / 24 bit)
● Bonus tracks (in stereo) (48 kHz / 24-bit)

Phil Collins released his No Jacket Required album on Blu-ray last month.
The mixes being:
● No Jacket Required – Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos Mix (48/24)
● No Jacket Required – Steven Wilson dedicated 5.1 Mix (48/24)
● No Jacket Required – Steven Wilson Stereo Mix (48/24)
● No Jacket Required – Original 1985 Stereo Mix (48/24)
Interestingly including a brand new stereo mix.
A vinyl set was released at the same time which includes previously unreleased rarities.

As you can see, unlike the Nonetheless Blu-ray these all include several alternative mixes.
I believe Warner had their finger on the pulse with the Nonetheless Blu-ray release.

These releases must be commercially viable and hot on the market at the moment.
Re-releasing classic 80s albums in expanded forms through several different mixes on a Blu-ray.

Should PSB do this with their imperial phase albums, would you welcome this?
PSB have mentioned avoiding releasing obscurities to not lessen the overall quality of their material, but reissuing an album in 5 different surround sound mixes avoids this.
It can also be an opportunity to include new bonus tracks without having it dilute the digital catalogue of material as they'll be exclusive to Blu-ray or physical media.

I'm umming and ahhing about buying the New Order ones right now. I bought the Nonetheless bluray but to be honest haven't got a system to play it on, so have no idea if it's really worth it. Is the Atmos version really as amazingly immersive as people suggest? I don't want to put down more money for something I potentially may not get the opportunity to experience.

I'd like to at least try my Nonetheless bluray on some proper equipment before committing to anything further.

This sort of thing doesn't really interest me much, since I've been happy with 44/16 (i.e. CD quality) throughout my life, and I doubt that my hearing is getting any better with each passing year. So long as any "bonus tracks" are available somewhere (even CD quality digital downloads) that would do me.

I also don't like BluRay for audio fidelity, since I couldn't be bothered rigging a BluRay player up to my proper audio equipment.

i think they are cool to have..

i dont have surround, but now i can play it on my laptop..

you can always extract the files if you have a drive, and make stereo versions.

also, some have instrumental mixes, and newer mixes of the albums..

Yes, it sounds wonderful imho. The orchestra comes from every direction sometimes. Other times the different "parts" come to you ftom the front or back. It's the way I play the album on my audio system.

But I have to admit: this is my personal opinion. I have friends who don't experience surround sound the same way.

Thanks! It sounds like it would be worth it, so I'll eventually get it set up and try it I am sure. Investing in these BluRays probably isn't my future until I try it out. so hopefully there are no immediate plans to do this with PSB albums.

I love music (and movies) in surround and also have a decent 5.1 UHD setup. The actual Dolby Atmos stream requires a 7.1 setup, but it plays the Dolby True HD 5.1 core on my set, which is already great. I have the Nonetheless bluray as well. I would not buy it for the sound quality of the stereo stream alone (which likely is better than the CD stream, but I doubt I would hear it). The brickwalling issue is a thing to consider though (big Suede fan and also their last 4 albums are great, but the brickwalling is so extreme that listening to them makes my ears bleed).

I'll skip the New Order blurays, as Movement for me is not surround sound material and Brotherhood has two fake surround tracks because the master tapes are lost, which I absolutely hate. Low Life would be the only option if I find that one in a sale (€45+ is just too much).

The upcoming Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here and FGTH welcome to the pleasuredome bluray audio releases are ones I really look forward to. I also own a few DTS 96/24 DVD audio albums from the 00s and later (Björk, Depeche Mode, Jarre, Pink Floyd) as well as a lot of SACDs that also have surround sound (mosly classical titles, but a few pop ones).

To anwer the TS questions: The PSB albums would lend themselves for a surround remix, but for €25+ each (or more, many of these bluray audio releases are UK only and come with €15-20 in p&p to the EU) that would be an expensive set to buy. And a very limited market of course. For physical discs in general, but the number of people actually owning a bluray player and surround set these days is a small fraction of these. The number of people who have an Atmos 7.1 setup is really low. Personally, I do not know anybody with such a setup. Actually, I am the only one in my extended friends, colleagues and family circles with a 5.1 setup and a 4K UHD player. I have two friends who own(ed) a regular bluray player, one of whom still has a 5.1 setup, but both are not bothered anymore by buying or watching actual discs as they moved to streaming.

I buy most of these blu ray releases. The latest one (human league) really brings out the subtle instrumentation. Brothers In Arms sound immense. Nonetheless, on a good system also brings out the instrumentation. The new order ones will be interesting. Can’t wait to hear Perfect Kiss in Dolby atmos!

The problem I have with the Phil Collins release is that it was just bare bones in terms of content. Sure, there were four different choices of listening, but not including "We Said Hello" or any other content like remixes or demos just didn't take my interest.

Heck, if you look at the Frankie Goes to Hollywood release....wow....talk about overwhelming content! There's SO much stuff on the SDE blu-ray!

True, that's why I bought the FGTH one, even though I find it a bit on the expensive side including P&P. The Pink Floyd WYWH 50th Anniversary bluray also hs many extras inclusing a full live show, and that is available in any record store for just €25, so no expensive P&P:

TBH I am not that keen on "new stereo mixes" of any album. To me, the released albums versions in stereo are always the gold standard. A remix like Bowie's Lodger is grey area, as neither Bowie nor Visconti were happy with that mix from a sound quality perspective.

Instrumental mixes are also not my thing. But I know people like them and I don't mind that they are sometimes included.
