I am watching the charts on Radio 1 but I don't see them. But of course, I knew they wouldn't be top 40.

As far as I can find out, the album did NOT reach the Album Top 75 this week. I doubt if it's listed in the regular album charts at all. Perhaps some kind of classical album chart?

Soundtracks do not chart on the proper album chart, there's a separate chart for them.

War of the Worlds, Gladiator and a Bob Dylan OST are all in this weeks official album charts.

Wrong.

Bob Dylan is a Best Of style compilation. It's labelled as 'OST' because there's a documentary about his career released on DVD shortly.

War Of The Worlds by Jeff Wayne is a concept album written and released by Jeff Wayne in the 70's, inspired by the original book and is not the soundtrack of the film.

I don't see whatever the 'Gladiator' is on the Top-40?

According to www.theofficialcharts.com album chart rules information, there is indeed a separate Soundtracks album chart.

Soundtracks and compilations do not chart in the proper chart. They haven't done so since the mid-80's.

Number 44 on the official album chart is Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard. Gladiator O.S.T

So what? There is also an official chart for RnB music and a rock chart. That doesn't mean you cannot chart in the official charts too. As the above link proves.

Compilations don't but if you take a butchers at the link provided, you will see O.S.T do.

This Gladiator CD is again, not the O.S.T of the actual film. It's a new album compiled by the composers of the original O.S.T, after winning lots of awards for the film music and the tracks on it are dance mixes and leftovers or unfinished demos that didn't make the soundtrack and don't feature in the film.

Soundtracks do not chart in the proper chart.

Not very suprising as its not being sold everywhere. I went to get it on Friday in Woolworths but there were no copies. It was supposed to be at number 44 but there were no copies, Woolworths probably ordered about 2.

I tried Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisions (all cheap places

) but none of them even had a position in the chart set aside for it - they just aren't selling it.

By the looks of it, Soundtracks appear in the Compilation chart as 99times out of 100 a soundtrack has tracks by more than one artist on it - hence its a compilation.

However, Jeff Waynes WOTW and Bob Dylan's latest offering contains tracks from a single artist and therefore is not deemed a Various Artists collection and appears in the standard chart.

I therefore see no reason why, if Battleship Potemkin sold enough copies to chart - and clearly it didnt - it would have appeared in the NORMAL chart.

On a separate note, EMI Classics webshite does not list BP anywhere.

Jeff Wayne, Bob Dylan and Gladiator are all *not* O.S.T's. BP is. There doesn't have to be a rationalisation, O.S.T's have not been eligible to chart in the proper album charts since sometime in the 80's, at the same time when the same rule for V.A's was applied.
