Same here, it's causing me an awful lot of grief. Sorry, I mean ex-girlfriend. I'm disagree.

Hey! I love Simon Price as much as I love nickname and I recognise what he's saying, as, I suspect, would Neil. He's just saying represssion suited them, not commenting about homosexuality. It's also not a bad review.

I read the review and I thought I recognised the simpering studenty smugness of it as it dripped off the screen.

Simon Price is utterly f*cking useless and I have no idea how he is able to get such plum reviewing and interviewing jobs.

This thread sums up the abject gormlessness that has swamped this forum in recent months. A perfectly thoughtful and well argued point, spliced with a little eye-catching controversy, and the poof police are out to scream from the rooftops.

Then again, it's been a long time since erudition counted for much around here.

An excellent review lost on the usual suspects. Having been at the Liverpool show on Sunday, I was left feeling a little queasy by the celebratory nature of the event. While the dynamic duo deserve to be embraced with genuine love, much of their impact is invested in slightly cool understatement. The current show eschews that for a party approach that, while enjoyable, divests the emotional highs of their impact. It's all one big funfair. To my mind at least, they've always been about a little more than mere fun.

Simon Price makes a similar point in an eyecatching manner. His review is far more prescient than some wish to accept.

Erm, well obviously the 'party approach' has been done before. Even Neil referred to Discovery as 'cheap and cheerful sh1t entertainment' a few years back. There was very little that was cool about it.

And what exactly has the fact that it has been done before got to do with the simple point that the celebratory approach can take the edge off much of their impact?

Price suggested the loss of subtlety in such a tack is something to bemoan. In my view, he's entirely correct. Whether it was lost in Brazil 12 years ago is really quite irrelevant.

Well you said that "To my mind at least, they've always been about a little more than mere fun." But I think you can safely say that since 1993 there's been a lot more 'fun' and a lot less 'cool'. Well maybe not Release, ahem.

I'm not saying that's a good thing, but I just wanted to point out to you that the 'party approach' of the new show that made you so ever so slightly queasy is not new, so you should have had a rough idea of what to expect. No point hankering after the long-gone glory days of the past. PSB have changed whether we like it or not.
