I live in a country where a neo-conservative government has unashamedly exploited
racism and lies to divide the country for its own benefit. Where when racist white
youths rioted in the streets, the government blamed the immigrants. We are now
ashamed of our own flag.
I also live in a country that lied to promote war. But my country was not reacting out
of fear after attack. This was solely for political benefit in trade deals. Yes, we were
with stupid. But sometimes the solution is worse than the problem...
I live in a country that crippled attempts to control global warming so shiploads of
coal can be sold for profit to China where now a new coal fired power station opens
every 5 days.
I have seen refugees locked in concentration camps (for years) throwing themselves
on barbed wire, seeking indefinite leave to remain.
All of which is done with a collaborating press that makes a mockery of the truth.
And when we're feeling scared we're happy, circuses and bread were happy.
And I could go on. But after ten years of this, ten years, I don't wanna think, I don't
wanna feel nothing. I want to be numb.
To me Fundamental is a powerful artistic reflection of the accelerating moral failure
of Western civilisation and the dark times we live in. And that is what art does best,
to hold up a mirror to society, to give a different perspective to the rest of us.
What is of pride to me is how the Boys have moved from the periphery of music, to
stand in the main stream, take shot and hit the politicians between the eyes in a more
effective way than many other critics, on the planet.
And remember that in the end, perhaps, it was a song that freed Nelson Mandela.
A storm is coming soon, to blow us all away...
You've got to learn to live where angels fear to tread...
