It seems they were around in the late 80s. Whether they'll sing live or it's all playback, I have no idea.tottenhammattspurs wrote: Wed 25 Feb 2026, 9:04 am Then they try to bring one or two English-speaking artists per year. This list would include:
Modern Talking
I wasn’t aware they’d ever played live anywhere. I’ve only ever seen miming performances. Miming performances so bad they make Army Of Lovers look like Radiohead.

Hey, I've been watching coverage and videos and reading about the festival. So, if I understand correctly, the audience decides through chanting who is winning the different trophies. That sounds very unPSB to me. Do you think this was arranged beforehand? Or maybe I didn't understand?

I think they have never before recieved so much media attention for just one show.

And the flappy seagull hand gestures! Yeah, it's certainly got its own culture, this festival, but why wouldn't it? It seems to be a longstanding, beloved institution.le petit corbusier wrote: Wed 25 Feb 2026, 11:23 am Hey, I've been watching coverage and videos and reading about the festival. ETA (Wikipedia is my friend): It looks like it's all decided by "The Monster" (audience approval) these days, although the nice woman in green (Karen Doggenweiler?) was definitely encouraging them! If you don't get enough claps and flaps, you don't get the award.
I think it's fair to say that PSB's position on awards has evolved, or at least relaxed, over the years. If you tried to hand Chris a seagull 40 years ago, he might have stomped off the stage; now he's making football jokes!

Is this the right video? This one seems to be about controversial moments at the festival in the past. Where's Neil??Nickname wrote: Wed 25 Feb 2026, 11:37 am Amazing crowd, Neil appears at the end in the car:

Neil: "We love Chile", after the show in Viña

This was the front page on a local newspaper in Viña (in Santiago, it was published with a different cover)

No, don't get me wrong. It looks like it was and absolute blast, with that audience, the massive media attention, the monster stage and all that liturgy inherent to the festival. It just seems so unlike anything else. But, I mean, they weren't really "competing" against anybody, right? What if the audience didn't chant loud enough? Or is it like you know they know you know they are going to clap enough so you get the seagull?petshopgrrl wrote: Wed 25 Feb 2026, 5:39 pmAnd the flappy seagull hand gestures! I've read about foreign bands not understanding the concept and storming off the stage. Does that make them losers? I don't understand!!

You can see what you need to win
GAVIOTA DE PLATA:
- The public (El Mounstruo) asking for it, moving their hands and saying "Ga-vio-ta" and moving their hands like the bird.
GAVIOTA DE ORO:
- The public (El Mounstruo) asking for it, saying "De-o-ro".
- A big impact and a quite long career.
GAVIOTA DE PLATINO:
- Give such an outstanding show people wanted you to win.
- More than 30 years of career.
- More times in the festival.
So they need to come back again more times to get the Gaviota of Platino and seeing you like part of the family and history of the festival.

Re: THIS JUST IN!: PSB are coming back to Chile (February 2026)
There are some competitive aspects to the festival (sounds like there’s a whole mini Eurovision Song Contest equivalent going on!) but the big international artists are just there to win the approval of The Monster, it seems. Apparently, approval is not guaranteed and boos are possible! But if your fans are gobbling up tickets, you’d have to mess up pretty badly not to get at least a Silver Gaviota. Maroon 5 played a notoriously disastrous set in 2020 and the country still hasn’t forgiven them!le petit corbusier wrote: Wed 25 Feb 2026, 7:33 pm

Nice to see that a “tight” festival set now means the Domino Dancing anecdote has been dropped.
